Kia ora, and welcome to the ultimate guide on everything earthing, otherwise known as 'Grounding'. We're here to talk about every question you've ever had about this intriguing practice. Whether you're a newbie to the concept of indoor earthing or curious about walking barefoot outside, we've got you sorted.

This blog is laid out so you can skip to the bits that matter most to you. So, grab a cuppa, and let's dive into the existing world of earthing with Blake, founder of Grounded Kiwi. New Zealand's Earthing Company.

1. Understanding Earthing: The Basics

Earthing, or grounding, is all about connecting your body to the earth's natural electrical charge. Think of it as plugging yourself back into nature's battery. By walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil, or using products like grounding mats or sheets, you may absorb electrons that could neutralise free radicals, potentially easing inflammation and boosting well-being. It's a practice with roots in ancient traditions, brought into the modern spotlight by Clint Ober in the early 2000s.

What is the basic concept of earthing? Earthing connects you to the earth's electrical charge, potentially balancing your body's energy and reducing inflammation.

Who invented earthing? Clint Ober kicked off the modern earthing movement of earthing indoors in the early 2000s, after connecting the dots between our modern, disconnected lifestyle and the corresponding increase in pain, sleep issues, and inflammation-related illnesses.

Is earthing a new concept? Nope, it's as old as the hills—think ancient folks walking barefoot, and many First Nations civilisations used the earth to heal. Modern earthing products, such as grounding mats, make this connection to the earth much easier to achieve every day, which is a new aspect.

What is the difference between grounding and earthing? They're the same in regards to the earthing concept. Just different terms that are used to describe the connection to the Earth.

When did people start grounding? Modern earthing started in the 2000s, but humans have been connecting with the earth forever.

How does earthing affect the body's electrical charge? Earthing has been shown to balance your body's electrical state by transferring electrons from the earth, potentially neutralising free radicals. Throughout the day and in every interaction with the object, we are either giving or receiving a charge. Often, we build up a static charge within our bodies. When we touch the Earth, we dispel this positive charge into the negatively charged earth, ridding our body of static.

2. Benefits of Earthing: Why It's a Game-Changer

Earthing's got a bit of a growing fan club, with over 96% of Grounded Kiwi customers raving about feeling better—whether it's sleeping like a log, easing aches, or waking up with more energy in the morning. ,

Does earthing help with sleep and energy? Absolutely, many people swear by earthing for better sleep and a vibrant energy boost! It’s thought to work by reducing stress, balancing cortisol levels, and restoring your body’s natural voltage to a healthier state. Sleeping time is the most important part of your day! Its really important to support your body to get good rest.

Does earthing reduce inflammation? Yes, earthing shows exciting potential for reducing inflammation! Research suggests it neutralises free radicals, which may lower inflammation, with studies indicating improved blood viscosity. Connecting with the earth’s natural energy could also help restore your body’s internal voltage to a balanced state, promoting overall wellness. Pairing an earthing pillow cover with a mat provides the most contact and is recommended for people with inflammation issues.

Can earthing help with depression? Some people reckon it lifts their mood, but we need more studies to confirm this.

Does grounding help with dementia? No specific research, but better sleep, increased blood flow and stress relief might support brain health.

Do grounding sheets help with ADHD? We have had some parents send in reviews stating that their kids focus better, but there is no hard evidence yet. This could be due to getting a better night's sleep. Many people with ADHD do struggle with sleep, earthing may help them get more restful sleep, which in turn may allow more calmness.

Does earthing help with migraines? We have had some fantastic reviews come in to say that Earthing (especially the earthing pillow) has been an absolute life-changing experience for some who suffer from regular migraines. This is possibly due to less inflammation and stress, and again allowing for more blood flow.

Does grounding help with blood pressure? Does grounding help with blood pressure? Exciting research suggests that grounding could be a natural ally in supporting healthy blood pressure! Studies, such as those exploring earthing and inflammation, indicate that connecting with the earth’s surface may improve blood flow and reduce blood viscosity, which can help keep blood pressure in check. By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, a known contributor to elevated blood pressure, grounding offers a promising, holistic approach to cardiovascular wellness. While more research is underway to fully understand these benefits, more people are using earthing to support their wellness alongside working with their doctor.

Is earthing beneficial for skin conditions like eczema? There’s growing buzz around earthing as a potential aid for skin conditions like eczema, and it’s easy to see why! Many people enthusiastically share that grounding seems to soothe their skin, possibly by reducing inflammation and calming the body’s stress response, which can often trigger or worsen eczema flare-ups. While specific studies on earthing and eczema are still in the works, the anti-inflammatory effects suggested in related research, such as studies on grounding and inflammation, hint at its exciting potential to support skin health.

Is there a benefit for people with diabetes? Earthing holds exciting potential for people with diabetes, offering a natural way to support health and well-being! Research suggests that grounding may promote faster wound healing and reduce inflammation, both of which are particularly beneficial for diabetics who often face challenges with slow-healing wounds and chronic inflammation. By helping to lower stress levels, which can impact blood sugar regulation, earthing may also contribute to a greater sense of balance and vitality.

How may earthing help with recovery from injury? Earthing may help with injury recovery by reducing inflammation, which is a key factor in healing. Some studies suggest that grounding can decrease inflammation and improve blood flow, potentially speeding up the healing process, especially in wounds. In simple terms: When you connect with the earth, it could help ease swelling and inflammation, allowing your tissues to heal faster.

How does earthing help the immune system? Some research suggests that earthing may contribute to reduced inflammation by balancing the electrical charges in the body. Since chronic inflammation can negatively affect the immune system, reducing inflammation might indirectly support immune function.

How does earthing help with headaches? Earthing may help alleviate headaches for some individuals by promoting relaxation and reducing stress, which are common triggers of headaches. Additionally, earthing is believed to improve blood circulation, potentially enhancing oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain, which could help reduce headache frequency or intensity.

Does earthing help with hot flushes? Some individuals have reported experiencing relief from hot flushes through earthing, attributing the benefits to its potential stress-reducing effects. Since stress can exacerbate hot flushes, the calming influence of earthing might help mitigate their frequency or intensity.

Does earthing reduce pain? Grounded Kiwi has had 1000's of our community report waking up with little or no pain. Massive improvements from normal pain levels. Studies suggest that grounding may decrease inflammation in the body which is often a contributing factor to pain levels.

Does grounding help with osteoporosis? Grounding may promote better circulation and reduce inflammation, which are factors that could potentially support bone health indirectly. Maintaining good circulation and lower inflammation levels are generally beneficial for overall tissue repair and health, but more specific research is needed to determine grounding's effects on osteoporosis.

These benefits can help alleviate stiffness and discomfort, potentially improving overall movement and flexibility. Many people find that incorporating grounding into their wellness routine helps them feel more active and comfortable in their daily activities.

What is the weirdest thing that earthing seems to help with? One of the most intriguing and perhaps unexpected areas where some people report benefits from earthing is its potential to reduce symptoms of conditions like tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and even certain neurological issues. While these claims are anecdotal and scientific research is still emerging, it's fascinating to see how grounding may influence various aspects of health in surprising ways. It's a testament to the body's interconnected systems and the potential for natural practices to support overall well-being in unique and unexpected ways!

Why do I have such vivid dreams when earthing? Many people find that grounding (earthing) helps improve sleep quality and promotes a deeper, more peaceful rest. Some individuals also report experiencing more vivid or memorable dreams as a result, which is a sign that you are getting into the much-needed REM sleep cycle so many of us lack.

3. How to Practice Earthing: Get Started Today

Earthing is as easy as kicking off your shoes and stepping onto the grass. If you are going to do earthing the old-fashioned way, try to get outside to connect at least once per day for 20 minutes. Getting outside to earth 2-3 times a day would be best. Otherwise you can bring the benefits indoors with products such as the Earthing mat from Grounded Kiwi. Using an Earthing mat is by far the best way as you are going to get 8+ hours of earthing every single day, and also right at the time when your body needs the support the most, as you sleep!

How to do earthing for free? You can practice earthing for free by simply making direct contact with natural surfaces. Here are some easy ways:

  1. Walk barefoot on grass, soil, sand, or unpaved outdoor paths.
  2. Sit or lie down directly on grass or other natural ground surfaces.
  3. Spend time in parks or natural settings where you can connect with the earth barefoot.
  4. Use outdoor gardening or outdoor activities that involve skin contact with natural surfaces.

Can I use a grounding mat while working at my desk? Absolutely! Using a grounding mat at your desk can be a convenient and comfortable way to enjoy the benefits of earthing while working. Simply connect the mat to a grounded outlet or use a grounding cord, and place it on your desk surface or under your hands or feet while you work. This allows you to maintain a connection to the earth’s energy throughout your day, promoting relaxation and well-being. It’s a simple, cost-effective way to incorporate grounding into your daily routine!

Does walking on concrete count as grounding? Walking on concrete can provide some level of grounding, especially if the concrete is unsealed and in contact with the earth underneath. However, most concrete surfaces are often sealed or treated, which can reduce their electrical conductivity. For the most effective grounding, natural surfaces like grass, soil, or sand are ideal because they allow direct contact with the earth’s energy.

Does hugging a tree ground you? Sometimes. Some trees are more conductive than others. The bark of some trees can act as an insulator.

Is saltwater grounding? Saltwater can be considered a good conductor, and swimming in the ocean or exposing your skin to saltwater can facilitate grounding by allowing electrical energy to flow between your body and the earth.

Can I wear socks while grounding? Thin cotton socks are ok. As your feet warm and create a little moisture, you will become more conductive. For cold climates, we recommend grabbing a pair of our Grounded Kiwi conductive socks.

Can I Earth while driving the car? What you can do in a car is grab an earthing seat pad. This pad doesn't connect you to the earth but to the chassis of the vehicle. Doing this, any positive charge that builds up in you will go straight through to the metal chassis instead, riding your body of static energy. Many people who drive long distances report arriving much less tired when using an earthing car seat pad.

Can I use a grounding mat with clothes on? Yes, you can, but the more layers between you and the Earth, the less effective the flow will be. Try to use cotton clothing if you can, as this supports conductivity the best. When sleeping in bed with pyjamas, your body's warmth and normal moisture will make you more conductive, which is still pretty good.

How to connect to the earth in a motorhome? Use a grounding mat with a rod stuck in the soil outside. Try to find a clever way to feed the earthing rod cord through the chassis into the cabin or otherwise go through the window. You will need to push the rod into the natural earth at each spot you park at. Grab a Earthing rod and cord set here:

Can I take my earthing product overseas? Yep, as long as the outlet's grounded. Take an Earth Socket Tester with you so that you can test before connecting your earthing product. Use a quality NZ/AU travel adapter and test with the Earth socket tester first.

Do leather-soled shoes allow grounding? They can, in some cases, unlike rubber soles, which will completely isolate you.

Are barefoot shoes earthing shoes? No, not normally. Shoes that are marketed as 'Barefoot' shoes are generally just shoes that are designed to be used without socks. They are likely to be still insulated from the Earths energy.

Are there shoes that allow you to be grounded? Yes, Earthing Shoes have a conductive sole and footbed, which, when designed correctly, will connect the wearer to the earth while wearing the shoes on a conductive surface, such as grass, soil, and sand.

Can I turn my shoes into grounding shoes? Yes, check out the Grounded Kiwi Earthing shoe straps which can turn pretty much any pair of walkers/sneakers/jandels into conductive footwear.

Can you sit in a chair while earthing? Yes, you can definitely sit in a chair while earthing! Using an indoor grounding mat or grounding pad placed on your chair or even under your feet while seated can allow you to enjoy the benefits of grounding comfortably.

Is water good for earthing? Yes, water is an excellent conductor and can facilitate grounding. Swimming in natural bodies of water like lakes, rivers, or the ocean allows your body to connect directly with the Earth’s energy through the water. Many people find that saltwater, in particular, enhances this connection and provides a natural, relaxing grounding experience. Just ensure the water is clean and safe, and enjoy the natural benefits of water-based grounding!

Am I grounded in a swimming pool? Swimming pools, especially those with unsealed concrete or natural surfaces, can sometimes conduct electricity and facilitate grounding. However, many modern pools are equipped with grounding systems or use chlorinated water that acts as an insulator, so they may not provide the same level of grounding as natural bodies of water.

Does a bath count as earthing?  Since most bathtubs are usually made of non-conductive materials like porcelain or acrylic, and if the water is not connected to the earth, it doesn't typically provide a strong grounding effect.

Does walking on the beach count as grounding? Wet sand's a top-notch grounding surface—go for it! Encourage others to take their shoes of when at the beach too, they will feel much better for it.

Does the type of soil affect earthing? Yes, the type of soil can affect the effectiveness of earthing because different soils have varying levels of electrical conductivity. Moist, rich soils like clay or damp soil generally conduct electricity better, making grounding more effective. Dry, sandy, or rocky soils may be less conductive, potentially reducing the grounding benefits. For optimal earthing, outdoor contact with moist, natural ground surfaces like grass, soil, or sand typically provides the best connection.

How does humidity affect grounding? Humidity plays a positive role in grounding because moist air and damp surfaces enhance the conductivity of the ground. When the environment is humid or the soil and surfaces are moist, electrical currents can flow more easily, making grounding more effective. Conversely, very dry conditions can reduce conductivity, potentially decreasing grounding benefits. Spending time in humid or damp environments, like after rain or on a dewy morning, can help maximise the natural electrical connection with the earth. Enjoy grounding in the fresh, moist outdoors mornings for the best earthing and morning light.

Is 10 minutes of grounding enough? Yes, many people find that just 10 minutes of daily grounding can provide noticeable benefits, such as increased relaxation, reduced inflammation, and improved sleep. Even brief but frequent sessions often help the body reset its electrical balance and promote a sense of well-being. Of course, longer or regular grounding sessions can enhance these effects, but starting with 10 minutes is a great, accessible way to experience some of the potential benefits of earthing!

Does more skin contact increase the benefits of earthing? Yes, increased skin contact typically enhances the benefits of earthing because it allows a stronger and more direct electrical connection with the earth. The more surface area in contact, such as walking barefoot on natural surfaces or using grounding products directly on your skin, the better the flow of electrical energy. This can lead to more effective reduction of inflammation, stress, and support overall well-being. Additionally, using an earthing mat at night for 8 or more hours can be especially beneficial, as it allows continuous grounding during sleep, helping your body relax and recover deeply. So, maximising skin contact and incorporating nighttime grounding can help you get the most out of your grounding routine!

Can you do too much grounding? No evidence says you can overdo it—listen to your body and hopefully you will find that it's your new favourite thing to do! If you are on blood-thinning medication, discuss earthing with your doctor prior to adding earthing as a regular part of your health journey. Earthing has been shown to potentially help thin blood, so if you are on medication for this, your doctor would want to monitor and adjust levels.

My family member is bed-bound, how can they connect to the earth? For a family member who is bed-bound, there are still ways to incorporate grounding into their routine. Using a grounding mat or pillow placed under them while they rest or sit can be very effective.

My family member is wheelchair bound, how can they connect to the earth? For a family member who is wheelchair-bound, grounding can still be easily integrated into their routine. They can use a grounding mat or blanket placed on their lap, chair, or wheelchair seat.

4. Safety and Concerns: Keeping It Safe

Earthing's generally safe as houses, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you're doing it right. Always check with your doctor if you've got medical conditions prior to adding earthing into your health journey.

Is it safe to use earthing products during a thunderstorm? For your safety, it’s best to unplug and avoid using earthing products during stormy weather and wait until the storm has passed. Even though the plugs and cords have inbuilt protection and burn-through wires, it's always better to disconnect if you are worried.

Can I use a grounding mat if I have a pacemaker? Indoor earthing is generally comparable to going barefoot outside, offering a safe way to connect with the earth’s energy. However, when practising grounding for extended periods, it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare professional before beginning, especially if you have any health conditions or concerns. This ensures you can enjoy the benefits safely and confidently.

Is earthing safe for people with metal implants? As above, yes, usually perfectly ok to do; however, if you have any concerns, you must discuss with your doctor prior to starting earthing.

Can I be electrocuted while using an earthing product? No way, not when using an Earthing plug and cord from Grounded Kiwi. We have designed our plugs to be the safest in the world and have been tested locally, proving that they protect the user even in the worst-case scenario, should a fault occur with your home's electrical system. Earthing plugs are not created equal. We strongly recommend using plugs and cords that offer the same level of protection as we do at Grounded Kiwi.

Is earthing safe for pets? Yes, earthing is generally safe for pets and can even help promote relaxation and reduce stress in animals. Just like humans, pets can benefit from Earthing. Many from the Grounded Kiwi community have reported that their pets seem drawn to the earthing mats. Indoor earthing can be highly beneficial for older pets or those that are unable to go outside as frequently due to health or safety concerns.

Is grounding safe during pregnancy? Yes, grounding is generally considered safe during pregnancy and can be a gentle way to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support overall well-being. Many pregnant women find that spending time barefoot outdoors on natural surfaces or using grounding products indoors helps them feel calmer and centred. However, it’s always a good idea to consult your healthcare provider before starting any new wellness practice during pregnancy, to ensure it’s appropriate for your individual situation. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of grounding confidently and safely.

Can grounding cause tingling? Yes, some people may experience a tingling sensation when starting grounding practices. This is often a sign that the body is adjusting to the electrical connection with the earth. Tingling can also result from improved circulation or the release of built-up electrical charges. Typically, this sensation is harmless and temporary. If it persists or causes discomfort, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure everything is alright. Overall, a tingling sensation can be a normal part of the body’s response to grounding!

Does earthing protect against EMFs or 5G? Some evidence suggests it might reduce EMF effects, but it's not a shield (Healthline Grounding).

Who should not use grounding sheets? Earthing is believed to help reduce the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and 5G radiation by promoting a healthy electrical balance in the body. The idea is that grounding can neutralise free radicals and restore natural electrical currents back to normal, potentially decreasing stress on the nervous system.

Is earthing OK for people who take medications? Yes, in general, earthing (grounding) is safe for most people, including those taking medications. It is a natural practice designed to support overall well-being by promoting relaxation, reducing inflammation, and enhancing sleep quality. However, since individual health conditions and medications vary, it's always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new wellness routine, especially if you have specific health concerns or are on medication. Your healthcare provider can help you monitor your medication levels. Many have found that when earthing is practised regularly like using the Earthing Mat for sleep, medication levels can be reduced or stopped.

Can I earth if I have a knee replacement? Yes, generally, you can earth if you have a knee replacement. Metal implants, including knee replacements, do not usually interfere with the electrical connection involved in grounding. However, it's always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider or orthopedic surgeon to ensure that grounding is safe and suitable for your specific condition.

Has anyone ever been harmed using an earthing product? The only reported case is a situation in the USA where one person had two separate earthing products being used simultaneously: one connected via a plug and the other via a separate earthing rod, during a lightning storm. A power surge went through from one earth to the other earth, and she suffered a grade one burn (light) . NEVER USE MORE THAN ONE EARTH POINT - Stick to either the earthing plug OR the earthing rod.

Are so-called ground currents bad for earthing? Ground currents are a natural part of the Earth's electrical system, and in most cases, they are not harmful and do not interfere with earthing. In fact, earthing is meant to connect your body to the earth's electrical energy, including these natural currents. However, in areas with heavy electrical infrastructure or electrical interference, it's wise to practice grounding in a safe and suitable environment. If you have concerns about electrical safety or live near significant electrical sources, consulting an electrician or grounding expert can help ensure you're grounding safely and effectively.

What are the negative effects of earthing? Earthing (grounding) is generally considered safe and beneficial for pretty much everyone, and there are no well-documented negative effects when practised properly. However, some individuals might experience mild side effects at first, like temporary tingling or fatigue, as their body adjusts to the electrical connection back to normal. We have found that if you don't ever connect to the Earth regularly before starting to earth indoors, these people sometimes feel worse for the first 1-4 days. If this is the case for you, we recommend easing yourself into earthing by either reducing the amount of time in contact or, for instance, placing the mat just under your feet for the first week.

What are the side effects of a grounding mat? Some individuals might experience mild side effects such as tingling sensations, especially when first starting, or a feeling of relaxation and calm. We also hear that some people feel warmer, especially in the extremities, such as the feet, hands, and neck. This is likely due to an increase in blood flow, which is generally a good thing.

Can grounding raise your blood pressure? Generally, grounding is believed to promote relaxation and improve circulation, which can help support healthy blood pressure levels. Most people find it to be calming rather than raising blood pressure. However, individual responses can vary, and if you have concerns about your blood pressure or any health condition, it's always best to consult your healthcare provider.

What is the tingling feeling when first starting earthing? The tingling feeling experienced when first starting earthing is typically a normal response as your body adjusts to a new electrical connection with the earth. It can be a sign that electrical charges are being balanced and released, promoting relaxation and improved circulation. This sensation is usually mild and temporary. If it persists or causes discomfort, consulting with a healthcare professional is advisable. Overall, tingling is often a sign that your body is responding positively to grounding.

Why do I feel worse after using a grounding mat? Feeling worse after using a grounding mat can sometimes happen, especially if your body is adjusting to the energy that it hasn't been in connection with very often or if there are underlying health sensitivities. Take it easy and either cut back on the time in contact with the earthing product or reduce the amount of skin contact for the first few days. Always seek medical attention if you have any concerns about your health.

Why does grounding make me hot? Feeling hot or warm when grounding can be a sign that your body is relaxing and releasing stored energy or tension. Grounding may improve circulation and promote the body's natural electrical balance, which can sometimes lead to a sensation of warmth. Additionally, as your nervous system calms down, you might notice an increased feeling of comfort and relaxation, which can include warmth. If you find the sensation uncomfortable or unusual, it’s a good idea to listen to your body and consult a healthcare professional if needed. Generally, this warmth is a positive sign of your body's response to grounding!

5. Scientific Evidence: What's the Deal?

Earthing has some scientific backing, with over 20 peer-reviewed studies and counting, but it's not a done deal yet. Due to the Earth's energy being completely natural and not something that can be patented, there is only so much money and resources that go into the research.

Grounded Kiwi tries hard to stay up-to-date and bring you all the research, which you can check on the research page here - Research

Is earthing a placebo? It could be partly placebo, but studies suggest real physiological effects, too. Most studies are double-blind and have control groups. The group that is actually earthing always has a higher improvement in health than the sham or ungrounded groups. We at Grounded Kiwi have also had many of our community say they have placed an earthing mat on their husband's bed, their kids' bed, without them knowing and have loved the less snoring, better sleep and increased energy, to name a few well-being markers!

What do medical professionals say about earthing? While we are slowly hearing back of more Doctors and medical professionals spreading the good word on earthing, many have diverse opinions about earthing. While some acknowledge that grounding is a low-risk practice that can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support overall well-being, others emphasise the need for more scientific research to understand its benefits and mechanisms fully. Many healthcare providers see grounding as a complementary approach rather than a replacement for conventional medicine. If you're considering earthing, especially if you have health conditions or are on medication, it's best to discuss it with your healthcare provider to ensure it fits safely into your overall health plan.

Is earthing pseudoscience? Earthing is not considered pseudoscience; it is a practice based on the idea that connecting with the earth’s electrical energy can promote health and well-being. There is some scientific research and clinical studies exploring its effects, such as reducing inflammation and improving sleep. However, more rigorous, large-scale research is still needed to fully understand its benefits and mechanisms. Many health professionals view it as a complementary practice with potential benefits, rather than a replacement for conventional medical treatments. If you're interested, discussing it with a healthcare provider can give you personalised guidance.

Is earthing a myth? Earthing is not a myth; it is a practice supported by scientific studies and numerous personal experiences, which suggest potential health benefits, including reduced inflammation, improved sleep, and stress relief. While research is still ongoing and more evidence is needed to fully understand how it works, many people find grounding to be a natural, beneficial way to support overall wellness. What is the difference between the Earthing Mat (Black in colour) and an Grounding sheet (Cotton with silver fiber thread)?

Great question! The main difference between the Grounding Mat and the Grounding Sheet lies in their composition and intended use.

  1. Grounding Mat: The Grounded Kiwi Earthing Mat is made from 100% carbon-infused perforated leatherette, which is highly conductive. It's known for its comfort, durability and high conductivity (100% conductive surface) , ensuring reliable use over a much longer period of time than grounding sheets which require direct skin contact.

  2. Grounding Sheet: The Grounding Sheet is made from cotton with silver fibre thread, typically containing around 5% silver. These sheets are designed to be used as a bottom sheet on your bed, providing a comfortable surface to sleep on while still allowing for grounding benefits.

How long do grounding mats last? Grounding mats are designed to be durable and can last for many years with proper care. The lifespan largely depends on the quality of the materials and their proper maintenance. Typically, a Grounded Kiwi grounding mat can last anywhere from 2 to 6 years or more. To extend its longevity, keep the mat clean, avoid placing sharp objects on it or bending it excessively, and follow the manufacturer's care instructions. If you notice any wear, fading, or loss of grounding effectiveness, it may be time to replace the mat for optimal safety and benefits.

How long do cotton earthing sheets last? As sheets are being slept on directly, they typically last anywhere from 12-18 hours, providing optimal grounding. After this time, we observe that the conductivity level begins to decline rapidly. This is due to many factors of wear and tear, such as washing, body oils, and sunlight. These sheets are an older style of grounding product. Grounded Kiwi recommends opting for the Earthing mat due to its 100% conductive surface and durability. The Earthing mat also gets the best reviews from Kiwis. You can see what people are saying about all of our products here: Reviews

Can I use a bed sheet over my grounding mat? Yes, you can. The Earthing mats with their 100% conductive surface are designed to be used with a sheet over the top. Cotton works the very best to support conductivity. Using this sheet on top means that the mat will last a long time, providing you with the benefits of earthing. Grounding sheets or half sheets cannot be used with anything over the top, as they require direct skin contact with the silver thread.

What are the best sheets to use over my Grounding mat? When using a grounding mat, it's best to use sheets made from natural, breathable materials that do not interfere with conductivity. Lightweight cotton sheets are a good choice. Cotton allows for some electrical conductivity through moisture and minimal fibre resistance.

What other sheets are ok to use with my Grounding mat? In addition to lightweight cotton sheets, other natural fabrics such as linen or bamboo can be suitable for use over a grounding mat. These materials are breathable and can allow for some electrical conductivity, helping maintain a connection between your body and the grounding mat.

Are silk sheets ok to use with my Grounding mat? Silk sheets can be used over a grounding mat, but it's important to note that they may not be as conductive as other natural fabrics like cotton or linen. Silk is a natural fiber and can allow some degree of conductivity, but it has a smoother and sometimes denser weave that might slightly reduce the grounding effect compared to more breathable materials.

Can I use flannelette sheets? For the best grounding experience, it's generally recommended to use thinner, natural, and breathable materials that allow for better conductivity. If you do use flannelette sheets, try to maintain as much direct skin contact with the sheet as possible (no pyjamas) to maximise benefits.

Is it ok to have a Woolrest on top of the earthing mat? Using a wool blanket or cover on top of an earthing mat is generally not recommended, as wool is an insulator and can interfere with the electrical connection between your body and the grounding mat. Grounded Kiwis' new earthing mats are buttery soft, and you should find these comfortable, especially when you are going to get the additional benefits of sleeping connected to the Earth's energy. You may like to place your Woolrest underneath the Earthing mat for more comfort.

My kid still wets the bed, can I use a plastic sheet over the top? Using a plastic sheet over a bedwetting child's mattress isn't recommended as a grounding solution. Plastic acts as an insulator, preventing effective electrical contact between the body and the grounding surface, which would negate the benefits of earthing.

What happens if my kid wets the bed? Is this dangerous when using an earthing mat? No not dangerous in the slightest. The moisture would actually make the earthing connection better. We recommend using an earthing pillow if bed wetting is an issue. This will still provide the earthing connection without the need for constant cleaning and potentially lessen the life of a grounding mat.

Why are earthing mats so expensive? Grounded Kiwi Earthing mats can seem expensive initially, but as you realise the improvements in your health and wellbeing, you should be asking yourself why you ever slept without earthing! Our products are designed with high-quality, conductive materials and incorporate specialised wiring and safety features to ensure effective and safe grounding in all conditions. Manufacturing processes, quality control, and certification standards also contribute to their cost. You see its not just the Grounding mat you are buying, a lot of work and testing has gone into our plug and cord as well to ensure tested safety for use here in New Zealand, unlike anything coming from overseas. Earthing mats as generally the same price as buying a nice sheet set from Briscoes but out mats come with the connection to the Earth!

Do grounding sheets need to be turned on? Grounding sheets do not need to be "turned on" like electronic devices. They work passively by providing a conductive connection to the earth when plugged into a grounded outlet or attached to a grounding rod. Once properly connected, they can continuously provide grounding benefits during sleep or rest without any additional action. The power switch can be on or off as this has no effect on the earthing in the slightest.

Why is there no light to show my earthing mat is working? Your earthing mat is only ever connected to the earth itself. It uses no power as it would be the opposite of earthing.

How do grounding mats connect to the earth? Grounding mats connect to the earth through a properly grounded electrical outlet. When plugged into a grounded outlet, the mat is connected to the building’s grounding system, which directs any excess electrical charge safely into the ground. Every home has an earthing rod buried deep into the earth and this is 99.9% the best way to connect to the Earth. We recommend use our Grounded Kiwi NZ/AU Earth Socket tester to ensure that each powerpoint you use is correctly connected the earth. Place the tester into the socket and turn the power switch on, which will show an LED light sequence showing a good earth or otherwise a fault with definition.

How do I know my PowerPoint is correctly earthed or grounded? Use an Earth Socket tester to ensure that each power socket has a good connection to the Earth.

What do I do if my ground tester shows a fault? You need to contact your local electrician to inspect. Do not use any earthing product in a power point that has shown a fault.

Can I make my own grounding mat? You could, with conductive materials and a safe ground connection, but do not use a power point as your earthing connection without inbuilt protection. Stay safe and buy an earthing product from someone who has done the groundwork to ensure earthing can be done safely inside the home.

Are there wireless grounding products? Nope, grounding needs a physical connection to the earth.

Which grounding product is most effective for sleep? Grounding mat and grounding pillow covers are ace for sleep as they cover more of your body and provide 8+ hours of connection time. Can I use a grounding mat with an electric blanket? Yes, place the earthing mat on top of the electric blanket. This will reduce your body's voltage exposure from the A/C electrical field that emanates from the electric blanket. The Earthing mat is perfectly fine to be used with the heat from an electric blanket.

Do you keep a grounding mat plugged in or should I pull out the plug during the day? Yes, keep it plugged into a grounded outlet at all times. Earthing products use no power and can be safely left plugged in 24/7. This way you won't forget to plug it back in!

Which side of a grounding mat goes up? Check the instructions—usually, the conductive side faces up with the cotton backing facing down onto your mattress. If you have a cotton with silver fibre product, such as the earthing blanket or grounding pads, you will be able to see the silver thread, which is what you need to have direct skin contact with.

7. Miscellaneous Questions: The Odds and Ends

Here's where we cover the extra bits and bobs about earthing that didn't fit elsewhere.

Is grounding like meditation?  Grounding and meditation are both practices that promote relaxation, reduce stress, and foster a sense of well-being. While grounding involves physically connecting with the earth's energy—through barefoot walking, sitting on natural surfaces, or using grounding devices—meditation typically emphasizes mental focus, breathing exercises, or mindfulness.

Many people find that grounding can enhance meditative states due to its calming effects, making both practices complementary. So, while they are different in approach, both aim to help you feel more centred, relaxed, and connected. Combining grounding with meditation can be a powerful way to support overall mental and physical health!

Why is grounding important spiritually? Grounding is often considered important spiritually because it fosters a deep connection to nature, the earth, and the present moment. Many spiritual traditions emphasise the importance of being rooted and aligned with the natural world, recognising that this connection can promote inner peace, balance, and a sense of unity with all living things. Grounding can help individuals feel more centred, grounded in their body and spirit, and more aware of their place in the universe. It’s believed to support spiritual growth by enhancing mindfulness, intention, and a sense of being supported by the natural energy of the Earth.

Why is grounding important psychologically? Grounding is important psychologically because it helps reduce stress, anxiety, and mental clutter by promoting a sense of stability and calm. Connecting with the earth can foster feelings of safety, balance, and presence, which are essential for emotional well-being. Many people find that grounding helps them feel more centred, focused, and resilient in daily life, especially during stressful situations. It fosters mindfulness and a sense of connection to nature, both of which contribute to a positive mental outlook and emotional well-being. Overall, grounding can be a simple yet powerful tool to nurture mental clarity and emotional resilience.

Is yoga a form of grounding? Yes, yoga can be considered a form of grounding. Many yoga practices emphasise connecting with the present moment, cultivating body awareness, and maintaining physical and energetic stability— all of which align with the principles of grounding. Better yet, why not actually connect to the Earth with Grounded Kiwis' Grounding Yoga and fitness mat for a full connection while practising yoga and mindfulness.

"I have arthritis, which results in broken sleep as I turn over and over like a rotisserie chicken lol. I've noticed my sleep has improved (less movement) my circulation seems to have improved and my feet are warmer. Other subtle changes also such as I've stopped with the restless leg movement. I'm very happy with this product 😃"

"Excellent - We have had the grounding mat for 3 months now and the changes are amazing. No more snoring [amazing], no body aches in the morning and generally feeling great. We have brought another for travel as you notice the difference when not sleeping on it. Definitely my best purchase in a very long time. Would absolutely recommend to anyone. Thanks Blake and family."

"Absolutely Amazing Product. From the first night very blissful. Snoring gone and nightmares are gone. Used to have panic-awakening dreams No more! Dreams more relaxing. Sleep easy 8 hours and feel so much more awake during the day. As soon as hit the bed out..within minutes. Sold the concept to my daughter and she loves it too. Quality outstanding and the afterpay option is great. Why not spend the most unproductive part of your day for 8 hours actually resting and the value for money is the best investment ever. I gave up explaining it to friends they think Im barmy but thats OK. I have an electrical background so have an external earth rod and voltmeter and able to trouble shoot problems I had early on with conductivity. Found the thinnest cotton bottom sheet the best and ruled polyester and the thicker flannelette as had a poor night with that. Bit of a ramble but hey I seldom review but this product deserves an honest opinion. Thankyou to your team for a fantastic concept and product."
