The Safety Secret: Why Grounded Kiwi is NZ’s Only Safe Option

Why Most Earthing Plugs in NZ Aren't Legal—and Why Ours Sets the Standard

Hi there! Hope you’re having a great day. If you haven’t taken a quick barefoot walk on the grass yet, here’s your friendly reminder to give it a try. I’ll wait!
Back already? Awesome.

Lately, we’ve had lots of calls from people feeling a bit confused. With all the flashy ads on Facebook from big overseas companies like GroundingWell (China) or Premium Grounding (Australia), it’s tough to know who to trust. They all promise "better sleep," but hardly any mention safety. At Grounded Kiwi, we believe you shouldn’t need to be an electrician to feel safe in your own bed. So, let’s chat about why our grounding mat plug is the only one in New Zealand that truly stands out.

The "Wild West" of Overseas Plugs

In New Zealand, our homes are wired in a special way called the MEN system. That’s why our safety rules are among the strictest in the world.

Here’s the truth: Most plugs you buy from overseas are technically sold illegally in New Zealand. Regulation 83 says every electrical accessory must have a "Supplier Declaration of Conformity." No other brand has this to date. They import products made for grids completely different to ours here. These plugs have no proven protection and no internal fuses. Using a plug without verified protection is like driving a car without a seatbelt. It seems fine until something goes wrong.

We Did the Mahi (So You Can Rest Easy)

In April 2026, Grounded Kiwi did something no other earthing company has done. We completed a formal national safety audit with WorkSafe New Zealand. The lead auditor gave us the "all clear," confirming our products are fully compliant. While other brands avoid regulators, we spent 2 years working with them to ensure our gear is as safe as possible while delivering the best wellness results for users.

The Secret is inside

For the technical minds (technical folks in the family or anyone curious), here’s why we designed our plug this way. The cord is engineered with a high-precision safety architecture that provides exactly 94k ohms of resistance. Why does that number matter? The "Let-Go" Rule: This level of resistance acts like a permanent brake. If there’s ever an electrical fault in your home, it keeps the current so low that you can’t get a dangerous shock.k.
  • Built for Surges: We spent tens of thousands of dollars testing and selecting the safest components. Our Grounding plug is, without a doubt, the safest and ONLY proven safe Grounding plug in the world. We tested our plugs with 10,000-volt surges 50 times in a row and passed the test with outstanding results. (Normal house is only 230/240v)
  • Cheap overseas plugs, which we also tested, use the lowest-grade parts and tend to fail or melt. That's right, these other cowboys are using a resistor worth just 1 cent, and that has never been electrically tested as fit for purpose to protect you.

5 Reasons Why Grounded Kiwi is the Only Choice

  1. NZ Government Audited: We are the only Grounding mat brand to have passed an Audit by WorkSafe NZ.
  2. Child Safe: Our plugs are designed so a curious grandchild can’t poke anything into the hole and touch something live. Most overseas plugs are wide open, which is a big risk and illegal.
  3. Local Taranaki Support: If you have a question, you can actually pick up the phone and talk to a local. Good luck getting someone on the line at a warehouse in China!
  4. 100% Conductive Carbon: We don’t use fragile silver threads that wash out in the laundry. Our mats are strong and made to last for years.
  5. I started Grounded Kiwi because we wanted to help people find real rest. You can’t truly relax if you’re worried about your gear's safety. We didn't just "pinky promise", we were the best—we proved it to the New Zealand government.

Pro Tip: The Grounded Kiwi Socket Tester

We recommend using the Grounded Kiwi Earth socket tester before you start grounding. This tool is useful if you move to a new home, use a different power socket, or travel. For easy grounding on the go, bring your Grounding pillow cover and socket tester with you. They work well in hotels and Airbnbs.
    Instructions

    Grounding Plug
    1. Use the socket tester to check the power outlet before you begin. We recommend this step to ensure you will get the benefits of a good ‘Earth’ connection.
    2. Plug the male end of the product’s coiled cord into one of the two female connectors on the grounindg plug.
    3. Attach the dome connector to your GK Grounding mat or other product.
    4. You’re now connected to the Earth.
You can also use our separate Grounding Rod and cord set to connect any of our grounding products to the Earth. Many people use this option in mobile homes like caravans and motorhomes.

    Grounding Rod
    1. Push the spike into the soil or garden.
    2. Feed the 12-meter cord through a window or under the floor.
    3. Connect the male end of the product’s coiled cord to the 12-meter cord.
    4. Attach the dome connector to your GK Grounding product.
